BEHIND THE SOUND: KIT LOCKEY
DJ, Voices Radio founder, community leader, breakfast show host — and now music producer.
Describing Kit Lockey as a multi-disciplinary artist barely scratches the surface.
Known for his eclectic and dynamic DJ sets across London that weave genres together to keep dancefloors moving, he’s built a reputation for championing artists and digging deep into their creative process.
With his debut track ‘Finding It’ on ‘We Move as One’, we flip the switch on Kit to explore his first steps into music production and the ideas that drive his artistry.
Tell us about your song, ‘Finding It’, on the compilation.
This is a pretty massive deal for me because it’s actually the first track I’ve ever released, and to be honest it’s the first track I ever made. Being on a label alongside the dons like Footshooter, Last Nubian, Beringei of course, Streeton, Divorce from New York, all them guys, their music is what got me producing in the first place!!
What sounds, genres, and artists do you draw inspiration from normally in your creative process?
I listen to and DJ a real wide range and it all finds itself in my music… inspiring this track is jazz, hip hop, jungle, soul, all wrapped up in a classic bruk bundle, a homage to the sound of Co-op.
Do you have a fixed way of creating music? Where do you normally start an idea form?
I started in music as a drummer so I always start there. Sometimes how the drums and bass interact come to me at the same time, and that was the case with this track. Melodical elements are much harder for me so I tend to get to them later once I’ve got a groove down that I’m feeling.
Any words of wisdom for anyone wanting to realise a creative project?
Ah man, easy one - stop making excuses and just START.
Do you have any upcoming projects we should keep an eye out for?
Working on music but nothing that’s scheduled for release yet! In radio, I host The Voices Breakfast Show on alternating Monday mornings which is packed with guests and features, tune in 9-11am if you can.
What album or EP will you likely have on repeat for the rest of the summer?
Kuna Maze - Layers.
