BEHIND THE SOUND: GOLDBAR

Goldbar’s reputation as a multi-disciplinary artist, instrumentalist, and producer is undeniable. Bridging jazz, funk, soul while drawing inspiration from the UK underground, his productions stand out as timeless Broken Beat songs in the making . Whether in the studio, collaborating with fellow producers, or performing live with ‘Ships of the Pharaohs’, his creativity and drive continues to evolve.

We caught up with him to explore his track ‘Warm Stepper (ft. Phoebe Train)’ from our compilation ‘We Move as One’ and discover what inspires his creative process.

Tell us about your song on the compilation.

Warm Stepper is a smooth summer song that builds layers throughout. With vocals from Phoebe Train, the song brings chilled summer energy to the listener.

What sounds, genres, and artists do you draw inspiration from normally in your creative process?

I love jazz, funk and soul and also UK dance music. Bridging the gap between the two worlds has always been an interest of mine.

Do you have a fixed way of creating music? Where do you normally start an idea form?

I mostly start an idea with chords and drums then build up the layers from there. I tend to prioritise arrangement and structure early on to build the story in a track. Once I have a basic structure I like to invite instrumentalists and vocalists onto my tracks to bring them to the next level. Sometimes leaving the idea for a while can help bring new ideas and fresh perspectives.

Any words of wisdom for anyone wanting to realise a creative project?

Keep at it, be pragmatic and take one thing at a time. There are lots of elements in creating music and it's important not to get overwhelmed by looking at everything as a whole. Start with an idea, structure the song and build layers to flesh it out. Outsourcing things you struggle with and getting help from friends can bring your idea to the next level. There's no harm asking for help with mixing or getting someone to play an instrument on your track.

Do you have any upcoming projects we should keep an eye out for?

I had another release on the same day as the compilation album with Last Nubian and Josh Leon Wray called Dance Together. The track was released on Sean Mccabes label Good Vibrations. Aside from that, I'm working on an album this summer combining my live sound with Broken Beat.

What album or EP will you likely have on repeat for the rest of the summer?

Tricky one! Lots of great music has already been released this year. Kuna Maze new album Layers is a great listen. Joe Armon-Jones All the Quiet (part 2) is incredible. MYT by Moses Yoofee Trio is one of my favourites too.

Any books, movies, or series you’re currently watching and would recommend, why?

Effortless Mastery is a great book for players and instrumentalists who are looking for new perspectives. As well as Dilla Time for the history heads.
